Skeptic's corner

3 myths about trade calculators

Trade calculators have a trust problem, and most of it is earned: black-box numbers, one-size-fits-all verdicts, no receipts. These are the three myths underneath it, and what we do instead.

Myth 1
"A calculator gives you one fair number."

The truth: fairness is a band, not a point. Dynasty value is uncertain. Any tool that hands you a single "fair" number is hiding that uncertainty from you. Our dead-even band is ±5 value points, the A–F grade scale publishes its exact margin thresholds, and the Show the math expander prints every asset's value on both sides. If you can't see the bands, you're not seeing the whole answer.

Where it lives: the trade calculator verdict: grade one and expand "Show the math".

Myth 2
"A fair trade is an equal trade."

The truth: a rebuilder and a contender can both win the same deal. A 24-year-old ascending receiver and a 31-year-old proven one are never "equal". They're valuable to different teams at different times. That's why our calculator grades every trade against your window: win-now, neutral, or rebuild. Equal isn't mutually beneficial. The best trades in real leagues are lopsided on purpose, each side getting what its window needs most.

Where it lives: the trade calculator's "Your window" toggle: try the same trade in all three modes.

Myth 3
"Calculator values are just somebody's opinion."

The truth: opinions don't publish their misses. We do. Our values are outputs of a transparent projection model, fit to a decade of history, priced for championship equity, with every assumption documented. And the model keeps receipts: 560 historical model-vs-market disagreements, the model right 65.4% of the time against 30.9% for the market. The five biggest misses are on the page too, with the diagnosis for each. An opinion can't do that.

Where it lives: the track record page, and the methodology behind it.

Still skeptical? Good. That's the correct posture toward any calculator, including this one. Read the methodology and check our work.
